Thrashy Stuff

dionysus (my server) keeps thrashing when I use Perl's CPAN module to fetch more Perl modules. So I should buy some RAM.

I haven't really bought much RAM. dionysus can take FPM/EDO SIMMs, or FPM/EDO/SDRAM DIMMs. As all the others are much more expensive, SDRAM DIMMs seem the obvious answer. But then I read a comment about CAS latency in the motherboard manual, so I have to find out what that is, which different sorts of SDRAM DIMMs have which CAS latency, etc. So now I see silly detail about exactly what this means, and I'm still in the dark as to the CAS latency of the PC100/PC133 SDRAM Ebuyer sells. Anyway, for £6 I'll buy a 64MB DIMM (won't take no more) and see what happens.

Starting to think I should buy a printer. Hmm. Seems like decent yet cheap printers are linux supported these days.

crucial.com

http://www.crucial.com/ has a memory selector. It's very good.

No use, I think

Unfortunately it seems to work with regards to motherboard manufacturer, whereas my motherboard manual carefully avoids mentioning any brand name. Oh, and the motherboard, I recall some time ago being unable to find out what chipset it used (the manual has the helpful label "chipset").

Eh?

Let me know when your ship comes close to earth and I will try to help with translation with the local humans.

Multiplicities

If I can't write a variety of stuff here, there's not much point. If you notice the categories at the bottom of each post, I plan to 1. Make those more visible 2. Include a nice way to filter I haven't thought of a great way to do the latter, but when I get time it will be possible to see either non-geek or geek entries, for example, or more specific selections.

So
